Thanksgiving decor- China Hutch

Welcome to day two of my Thanksgiving decor. Isn't this much better than I am breaking this down in stages? I think I like it better as I now have something to blog about every day. If you missed day one, which was about my mantel, you can click here to see.

Today I am going to share my china hutch which sits in my family room. My kitchen and my family room are actually one big great room. So the china hutch works in my family room.

Here is a view of the china hutch. I bought this years ago at an antique store. I got quite a deal on it. It was the perfect size when I lived in an apartment. I keep saying I am going to paint it, but so far, I've managed to procrastinate that project for about 15 years. Plus I can't make up my mind if I want it black or white. I can't make a decision!!!!

The turkey plates came from Marshall's and/or TJ Maxx a few years back. They were so very reasonably priced and I picked up my set over a two or three year period. I have dinner plates, salad plates & bowls for 24. That is why we have Thanksgiving at our house. It's not because my hubby makes a killer turkey with stuffing, it's because I have the turkey plates.

The clock on top of the hutch belonged to my MIL. Hubby is the only one allowed to change the time on it. I have a clock obsession, but this clock is hubby's obsession. The clock is always in this spot.

To the right of the clock is a white pitcher that I got from some Frenchy catalog about 10 years ago. I have an obsession with white pitchers as well. I have it sitting on a book that I picked up from the thrift store. I love finding books at the thrift store to decorate with. I never read them. I really don't care what they are about. I buy them for their color.

The "Count your Blessings" sign I picked up on clearance at Deseret Book in the spring. It works great for this time of year. The little ceramic pumpkin was a Dollar Tree find. So everything in this vignette was a thrifty find, except for the pitcher. But it was worth every penny I spent, even if I can't remember how much that was.

To the left of the clock I have a pilgrim couple under my cloche. The pilgrims came from Big Lots years ago. The crystal cake plate I got wholesale from Tender Heart Treasures and the cloche came from Walmart a few years back. It originally covered a white glitter house sitting on a silver plate. I got it on clearance. I just took off the cloche to use all year round.
On the upper shelf I have the bowls that match my turkey plates. The salad plates were too tall for this shelf. So the bowls work great. I also have these pumpkin bowls that I got last year from Crate & Barrel on clearance. I had been so good last year not spending any money until I saw these bowls, they caused me to fall off the wagon. You can read about it here on my family blog. Could you have resisted these? I rest my case.

This red transferware pitcher is my newest thrifty find. I paid $1.99 for it. You heard me right, $1.99. And it didn't come from a thrift store. I snagged it at our new TJ Maxx. When I saw the price, I did the happy dance. I thought it had to be a mistake. They had matching creamers that were $7.99 and everything else that matched this pitcher was higher priced. I thought for sure when I went to the cashier they were going to tell me it was mismarked. But because the store had just opened, I don't think they realized it. I did get it for $1.99. Are you jealous?

Here is a view of the 2 main shelves. The 2 white pitchers on the top shelf both came from either a thrift store or an antique store. But I know they were thrifty finds.

The red transferware pitcher on the left I got in Phoenix this summer at an antique store while on vacation. I paid about $12.00 for it. The little pitcher & tray in the middle came from a Wedgewood/Waterford outlet in Vegas years back. I'm pretty sure they are Johnson Brothers & I got a screaming deal on them. The last few years when I visit this outlet while in Vegas, they no longer have the deals that they used to have. The glass turkeys came from Joann Fabric a few years back.

Now we will move onto the bottom. The cake pedestal I made years ago out of a rose china plate and a crystal candlestick. All my rose china plates and crystal candlesticks have come from various thrift stores over the years. I have placed a ceramic white pumpkin on the plate & surrounded it with faux pumpkins, gourds, acorns and some faux hydrangea. The red transferware creamer came from a thrift store years ago. The little white fabric pumpkin was made by a dear friend & given to me a few years back.
My rooster lamp with the red & white toile looks perfect with all my red & white transferware.
In the center I have a white platter from my Big Lots Gibson china set. I placed a turkey plate in front of it. In front of that I've placed the pumpkin soup tureen that matches the little pumpkin bowls I picked up from Crate & Barrel last year. The tureen cost me $12.95. Isn't that a thrifty find?
I love this little silver leaf with the birdies. I picked this up at a thrift store last year for a dollar or two. I love the patina on this. I threw on some pumpkin scatters that I picked up at Dollar Tree.
On the left side I have 2 cloches covering 2 pumpkins. I made this cake pedestal as well. The cloche top is actually a cheese dome. It fits perfect on this pedestal under the shelf. The pumpkins came in a set of 3. The third one I am using elsewhere in the room. You'll just have to wait to see. The brown transferware plate that the one cloche is sitting on came from Marshall's. The acorn is actually a candle. I got it at Kohl's at the end of summer. It was 50% off, plus I had a coupon to get another 30% off. So it was a thrifty find as well.
Did you notice that I took off my silver coffee and tea set? I was getting bored with it. Which really translates to: I was too lazy to polish the silver for photos. Plus I needed a place to show off my pumpkin soup tureen.
Well I hope that you enjoyed seeing my china hutch decorated for Thanksgiving. Right now the count for Thanksgiving is 13 people. But that count changes daily. I'll keep you posted.

I love, love, LOVE your beautiful red toile lamp...and you're right...it looks fabulous on the hutch with all the dishes!!! Okay...I have to tell you that my very most favorite piece on your hutch is that fabulous...with a capital "F"...frenchy white pitcher that you have on the top shelf! PS...I have been following a new blog "Musturd Seed Creations"...have you heard of it? This gal specializes in refinishing furniture. Anyway, she has been doing alot of pieces where she leaves the top of the piece in a dark natural wood but then paints the base. I really could see your beautiful hutch done that way! I think that leaving the countertop a dark wood and painting the rest black would be gorgeous! I know...I know...I'm a fine one to talk...I have several pieces right now that I want to paint and haven't done it. It's a whole lotta work!!! Hehe!

  5. It all looks so lovely. I especially loved the white pitcher collection, as I am well on my way to my own collection. Just one question, as I thought I had a ton of seasonal decorations, but don't even come close to you, where on earth do you store all your beautiful treasures when you are not using them? We all want storage tips!!! Wish I could see it all in person, looks great!

  9. Oh. My. Goodness. your hutch looks so nice, Kim. I just love the red transferware, even more than blue, I think! You did a fantastic job displaying everything...looks so nice with the white pumpkin mini tureens and the amber turkey snuggled in. Your little toile lamp fits in perfectly. I can't believe you got that pitcher for only $1.99...wish my TJMaxx would price them that way! Love Mr. & Mrs. Pilgrim 'under cover', too. I look forward to TT every week, just to see what you have put together. Thanks for sharing.

  23. Hi Kim!
I LOVE your whole look! To me that hutch is crying for a coat of shabby white. I can imagine that transferware in a white cabinet. So pretty. You have such a way in creating sweet vignettes. Great pics. Thanks for sharing! What wonderful treasures you found!

  24. It is all very beautiful. I enjoyed seeing it and getting inspired. I'll have to look more at TJ Maxx and Marshall's, especially for fall-themed things. I have practically none.
