Little Prudy

For Valentine's Day my hubby took me antiquing. I love to go antiquing. But since we don't have much money, it's more like thrifting when we go. It makes it more of a challenge when you don't have much to spend.

Lucky for me there is one antique store in Temecula called Granny's Attic that tends to have lower prices than the pricier ones in Old Town Temecula. I usually can find stuff for thrift store prices there. And Valentine's Day was no exception.

Here is a treasure I scored on my last trip. Two Little Prudy books.

Now I had never heard of these books prior to laying my eyes on them. But it was love at first sight when I saw them. Maybe Valentine's Day had something to do with it. I paid about $8.00 for the both of them. They were marked 20% off. That was more than I would normally pay for a book. But it was "love"!!!! And it was Valentine's Day.

Little Prudy was first published in 1863. It was Sophie May's first book and the first in the "Little Prudy" series. Little Prudy's Cousin Grace is actually the fourth book in the series.

My two books were actually printed some time in the early 1900's. One of the books had 1916 written inside. The other book didn't have an inscription. But it looks about the same age. So I guess they aren't true antiques for a few more years.

I just love old books. It's a fairly new collection for me. Mostly I buy old books for their color or cover to use as decoration.
I used my new "old" books on my Valentine mantel. And I'm sure I will be using them in my Spring decor as well.

What treasures have you found lately?

  1. Those books are AWESOME...what a find. I love anything with inscriptions and dates...to me it makes it so much more personal. I don't know how anyone could ever get rid of something like that...I think that makes me a hoarder :)

  5. Wow what great old books. So neat having an inscription inside from that long ago. Makes you wonder about the person that gave the book and the person who received it.

  10. My sister loves those books and read them to her daughter growing up. They are the sweetest stories. Those will be great little treasures to pass down to pass down in your family. You need to write a little card or something to put in it about your romantic day with your husband antiquing. That will make it even more special someday for someone to find the handwritten note tucked inside its pages.

  11. Oh, Kim! Those books are fabulous! It's no wonder you fell in love! I'm kind of a old cookbook nut but still crazy about children's books too.
About 10 years ago, I found four Beatrix Potter books that were turn of the century. Your husband looks very sweet.

  12. What a great find. I don't do antiques, but love to see what others do with them.

Thanks for stopping by to visit - I love having new friends.

I read your previous post about the balloon - I sent my husband on a ride for his 50th birthday here in the foothills of Colorado. He loved it.

  14. Hi Kim,
Oh how funny, I was at Granny's Attic on Valentine's Day too! I scored on a couple of Frenchy lamps that day. Your books are quite a find and they make a lovely vignette.
